Do pinecones damage travertine pavers?

Pinecones can damage just about any product including travertine pavers.  When someone is installing travertine pavers and they have pinecones dropping from their trees, we will often suggest cutting the tree down.  Many trees have leaves with some sort of acid in them, but pinecones have a stronger acid that can eat through natural stone and many other surfaces.  Another question that is asked related to this question of pinecones is will sealer protect the travertine pavers from pinecones and the answer is no.  The acid from the pinecones will eat through the sealer and make its way through the travertine pavers.  The best option is to cut down the tree.  Realize some trees are very tall and sometimes the pinecones from your neighbor’s tree can eat through your deck causing damage.
